CMR vs SMR hard drives: which is safe for a NAS?

What the two actually mean

  • CMR (Conventional Magnetic Recording) writes tracks side-by-side without overlapping them. Writes are predictable and consistent — exactly what RAID expects.

It’s cheaper per terabyte, but writing into an already-used zone can force the drive to rewrite the whole zone — “write amplification” — which causes long pauses under sustained writes.

A RAID rebuild hammers every drive with sustained writes for hours. An SMR drive can fall so far behind during that write storm that the controller times it out and marks it failed — turning a routine rebuild into a degraded, at-risk array.

For a single external backup drive, SMR is usually fine. Inside an array, it’s the thing most likely to ruin your week. This is exactly the failure mode that drove the 2020 industry backlash when several “NAS” drives shipped as SMR without it being disclosed on the box.
