About WorthaByte

WorthaByte is a hardware deal-intelligence site. Right now it does one thing well: it tracks hard drives — their specs, their price history, and whether a given listing is actually a good buy today.

Why it exists

Most “best hard drive” pages are either out-of-date spec sheets or thin affiliate roundups that rank drives by commission, not by value. WorthaByte is built the opposite way. Every drive carries scores computed from named, citable factors — never a black box, and never adjusted for what a retailer might pay us.

You can always open a “Why this score?” breakdown and see the exact inputs and the manufacturer sources behind them. When a fact can’t be confirmed, we mark it Unknown and lower the score’s confidence rather than guessing.

What we track today

  • Specs, verified against manufacturer datasheets, with a visible confidence level when a fact can’t be confirmed.
  • Price history for each listing, refreshed daily, so a “sale” that isn’t really a sale gets caught.
  • Use-case fit — most importantly, whether a drive is safe for 24×7 multi-bay NAS / RAID use.

The exact factors, weights, and sources behind every rating are public on our scoring methodology page.

How WorthaByte makes money

Right now, it doesn’t. WorthaByte has no active affiliate relationships. Outbound retailer links are plain, untagged URLs that earn us nothing. Affiliate revenue is the intended way to fund the site, and we expect that to change — but we would rather say so plainly than imply an income we don’t have.

When it does change, one thing will not: No retailer can pay for a better score or a higher ranking. A payout is not an input to any score, and we do not re-order, boost, or hide drives based on one. If a recommendation and our revenue ever point in different directions, the recommendation wins — that’s the whole point of the site.

See our affiliate disclosure for the full details.

What’s next

Hard drives are MVP1. We’ll only expand to other hardware (SSDs, memory) once the drive model is genuinely solid.

Scores are decision aids, not guarantees. Always confirm specs and condition with the retailer before purchase.
